Avanti 12-Bottle Wine Cooler

If you are looking for a super-value wine cooler that can hold up to 12 standard-sized wine bottles, (4) of which can be stored upright, then you’d be hard-pressed to beat the best-selling Avanti 12-Bottle free-standing wine cooler. Of course, this model is not perfect, and you should be aware of some of its idiosyncrasies before considering a purchase.

Avanti 12-Bottle Wine Cooler – Overview & Specifications

The Avanti is a small, 12-bottle thermoelectric wine cooler that is most notable for being able to store up to 4 of the 12 bottles upright. For many people, this is a huge selling point, and it makes sense. Storing an opened bottle on its side is just asking for a mess. We applaud Avanti for this practical design.

Beyond that, the Avanti brings good, but not any earth-shattering features – things like easy-to-access 5 wire racks, crisp digital controls and display, an insulated window for viewing, and a blue LED interior light for illumination. Remember that this is a free-standing, rear-venting unit, and therefore must be moved at least 6-inches away from a wall for it to vent properly.

The styling of this wine cooler, however, is definitely a cut above what’s you’d expect at its price point. In particular, the curved glass front really gives it a more “pricey” look that belies its remarkable value.

Cooling Power & Efficacy

This unit does what it’s supposed to, and should work to keep most reds/wines within comfortable storage and/or service temperatures. Nevertheless, keep in mind that a thermoelectric unit like this has its limitations. For starters, if you are putting it in a room that experiences considerable heat flux, internal cabinet temperatures are sure to wander. Consequently, I would recommend this unit in areas that are relatively stable or generally remain on the cool side throughout the year.

Another thing to recognize is that the temperature sensor on most of these aggressively-priced units can sometimes be significantly off. The best way to deal with this is to check it against another probe and set the unit a bit higher or lower as needed to get temperatures where you want them. No big deal really, but something to keep in mind.

Operating Noise Level

The Avanti 12-Bottle Wine Cooler would probably be even more popular than it already is if it weren’t for the many reviews that dinged it for being “too loud.”

So what’s too loud? That’s a difficult question as everyone has a different threshold for what’s considered “noisey”; however, if you can’t deal with the sound produced by an older-style desktop computer tower, then you should look elsewhere. To be fair, there were almost as many reviewers who claimed that it was quiet, but with such conflicting impressions you do have to assume that this model will be clearly audible. This is far less of an issue if the unit is located in some utility room or a basement (which is probably best in summertime anyway). On the other hand, if it will be in/near a room where you are entertaining, sleeping, or watching TV, think carefully.

User Satisfaction

To date, this model has received an average user rating of 3.8 out of 5.0 stars. In most cases where it lost points, it was due to noise issues as already discussed. Other reviewers felt it was cheaply made and some complained about its poor warm-weather performance. One user took issue with the fact that the interior light stays on only temporarily (10 minutes) after the door is opened, and cannot be set to remain on all of the time.

Price and Value

This is where the Avanti shines. At the time of this writing, the Avanti is selling for just over $100. This is a shockingly-low price for any 12-bottle wine cooler, much less one that is fairly competent and comes with great styling. If you are pressed for cash yet need a 12-bottle wine cooler that works well, this is probably your best bet.

Avanti 12-Bottle Wine Cooler – The Verdict

While certainly not among our favorite small wine coolers, the Avanti is undeniably value-oriented and delivers unparalleled bang for your buck. For this reason, we can understand why it is topping the best-seller list on amazon.com. Consequently, if you are on a very tight budget, need at least a 12-bottle capacity, and don’t mind a little fan-noise, we say go for it.

On the other hand, if you need a wine cooler for a hot room, the thermoelectric cooling mechanism will almost certainly struggle to keep up when the mercury rises. In these cases, it’s always better to go with the power and efficiency of compressor-driven wine coolers.
